What is a Kundli?

A Kundli, also called a Janam Kundli, Janam Patri or birth chart, is a map of where the Sun, Moon and planets were at the exact moment and place you were born. Vedic astrology uses it to describe personality, strengths, timing of life events and compatibility for marriage.

The chart is split into 12 houses. The first house starts at your Lagna (ascendant), the sign rising in the east when you were born. Read our guide to the 12 houses in Kundli to learn what each house means.

What your free Kundli includes

  • Lagna chart (D1) and Chandra (Moon) chart, in North or South Indian style.
  • Planet positions: sign, exact degree, nakshatra and pada, house and retrograde status for all nine grahas.
  • Rashi and nakshatra: your Moon sign and birth star, used for naming and matching.
  • Mangal dosha check from both Lagna and Moon.
  • Vimshottari dasha: every mahadasha with its antardashas and pratyantardashas, plus the sookshma dasha running today, with exact dates.

Why the birth time and place matter

The Lagna moves through all 12 signs in about 24 hours, so even a 10 to 15 minute error can shift it. The birth place sets the local time zone and the horizon. We look up the time zone that applied on your birth date, including old offsets and daylight saving, so births outside India are calculated correctly too.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make my Kundli online?

Enter your date of birth, time of birth and the city you were born in, then press "Make Kundli". Your birth chart, planet positions, nakshatra, Mangal dosha and dasha periods appear instantly.

Can I make a Kundli by date of birth only?

Yes. Tick "I don't know the birth time" and you'll still get your Moon sign (rashi), nakshatra, planet positions and dasha. The Lagna (ascendant) and houses need a birth time, so they are left out.

Which ayanamsa does Astrovidia use?

Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa, the standard used by the Indian government calendar and most Indian astrologers. Rahu and Ketu use the mean node.

What is the difference between North and South Indian charts?

They show the same chart in two layouts. In the North Indian (diamond) style the houses stay fixed and the sign numbers move. In the South Indian (square) style the signs stay fixed and the Lagna is marked. Switch between them above your chart.

Is my birth data stored?

No. Your Kundli is calculated in your browser, so your birth details are not sent to our servers unless you choose to save the chart to your account.

Astrology is a traditional belief system. Your Kundli is for guidance and self-reflection, not professional advice.
