Nadi Dosha: Meaning, Types, Cancellation and Remedies

Nadi dosha is the most talked-about problem in Kundli matching. It happens when the boy and girl have the same nadi, which is decided by the nakshatra the Moon was in at birth. The Nadi koota is worth 8 of the 36 gunas, the most of any koota, so a Nadi dosha takes away 8 points at once.

What is a nadi?
In Ayurveda, nadi means the body’s channels and the three temperaments (doshas) of vata, pitta and kapha. In Kundli matching, each of the 27 nakshatras belongs to one of three nadis:

Different nadis = 8 out of 8. Same nadi = 0 out of 8, and that is Nadi dosha.
How to check Nadi dosha
- Find both partners’ birth nakshatra (Janma nakshatra). It is shown at the top of your free Kundli.
- Look up each nakshatra in the table above.
- If both fall in the same row, there is Nadi dosha.

Types of Nadi dosha
- Adi Nadi dosha: both partners in an Adi nakshatra.
- Madhya Nadi dosha: both in a Madhya nakshatra. Some astrologers call this the most serious, though texts don’t agree.
- Antya Nadi dosha: both in an Antya nakshatra.
- Eka Nadi: another name for the same situation, “one nadi” for both.
When Nadi dosha is cancelled
Traditional texts list exceptions (parihara). The most commonly applied are:
- Same rashi, different nakshatras. For example, both are Mesh rashi but one is Ashwini and the other Bharani.
- Same nakshatra, different rashis. Possible for nakshatras that span two signs, such as Krittika, Mrigashira, Punarvasu, Uttara Phalguni, Chitra, Vishakha, Uttara Ashadha, Dhanishta and Purva Bhadrapada.
- Same nakshatra, different padas (quarters).
- Same or friendly Moon sign lords, in some traditions.
If any of these applies, many astrologers treat the Nadi score as cancelled, and some restore the 8 points.
How serious is Nadi dosha?
Tradition links Nadi to health and children, so families take it seriously. Keep a few facts in mind:
- With three nadis, about one in three random couples has Nadi dosha. It is very common.
- Several cancellation rules apply often, especially for couples born under the same rashi.
- Claims that Nadi dosha equals a “blood group” or genetic mismatch have no scientific basis. If you have genuine health concerns about having children, talk to a doctor.

Remedies for Nadi dosha
Traditional remedies include Mahamrityunjaya mantra jaap, a Nadi dosha nivaran puja, donating grain, gold or a cow (godaan) to Brahmins, and in some families reciting the Vishnu Sahasranama. These are matters of faith. No remedy is required, and you should never be pressured into paying for one.
