Rashi by Name: Find Your Rashi From the First Letter
Published
In this article
Your rashi by name is the Moon sign linked to the first sound of your name. In Vedic tradition a baby’s name is chosen from the syllable (namakshar) of the nakshatra the Moon was in at birth, so the name and the rashi line up. That is why you can look up a rashi from a name alone.
Below is the full letter chart for all 12 rashis, how to use it correctly, and when your birth rashi gives a better answer.
Rashi by name letter chart
Find the first sound of your name in the right-hand column. Use the sound, not the spelling: “Kh” in Khushi and “K” in Kavya belong to different rashis.
| Rashi | English sign | Name letters (first syllable) |
|---|---|---|
| Mesh | Aries | Chu, Che, Cho, La, Li, Lu, Le, Lo, A |
| Vrishabh | Taurus | I, U, E, O, Va, Vi, Vu, Ve, Vo |
| Mithun | Gemini | Ka, Ki, Ku, Gha, Nga, Chha, Ke, Ko, Ha |
| Kark | Cancer | Hi, Hu, He, Ho, Da, Di, Du, De, Do |
| Simha | Leo | Ma, Mi, Mu, Me, Mo, Ta, Ti, Tu, Te |
| Kanya | Virgo | To, Pa, Pi, Pu, Sha, Na, Tha, Pe, Po |
| Tula | Libra | Ra, Ri, Ru, Re, Ro, Ta, Ti, Tu, Te |
| Vrishchik | Scorpio | To, Na, Ni, Nu, Ne, No, Ya, Yi, Yu |
| Dhanu | Sagittarius | Ye, Yo, Bha, Bhi, Bhu, Dha, Pha, Dha, Bhe |
| Makar | Capricorn | Bho, Ja, Ji, Khi, Khu, Khe, Kho, Ga, Gi |
| Kumbh | Aquarius | Gu, Ge, Go, Sa, Si, Su, Se, So, Da |
| Meen | Pisces | Di, Du, Tha, Jha, Na, De, Do, Cha, Chi |
Why some letters repeat: the Hindi alphabet has two “T” sounds and two “D” sounds that English writes the same way. In Simha the “Ta” is the hard ट (as in Tina), while in Tula it is the soft त (as in Tarun). Likewise Kark’s “Da” is ड and Kumbh’s “Da” is द. If your name is written in Devanagari, the letter settles it.
How to find your rashi by name, step by step
- Say your name out loud and note the first syllable: “Ankit” → A, “Shreya” → Shre, “Vikram” → Vi.
- Match the sound, not the first letter. “Shreya” is closest to Sha (Kanya). “Aarav” starts with A (Mesh), because long and short “a” count as the same sound.
- Use the closest syllable. “Bhavya” → Bha → Dhanu. “Gaurav” → Ga → Makar. “Saanvi” → Sa → Kumbh.
- Break ties with the Devanagari spelling for the T and D sounds explained above.
A few worked examples:
| Name | First sound | Rashi |
|---|---|---|
| Rahul | Ra | Tula (Libra) |
| Priya | Pi | Kanya (Virgo) |
| Aditya | A | Mesh (Aries) |
| Neha | Ne | Vrishchik (Scorpio) |
| Karan | Ka | Mithun (Gemini) |
| Meera | Mi | Simha (Leo) |
| Diya | Di | Kark (Cancer) if written डिया, Meen (Pisces) if written दिया |
Each letter also points to a nakshatra
The 12 rashis are made of 27 nakshatras, and each nakshatra has four padas (quarters) with one syllable each. That gives 108 syllables. “Chu, Che, Cho, La” are the four padas of Ashwini, “Li, Lu, Le, Lo” are Bharani, and so on.
This matters because Kundli matching uses the nakshatra, not only the rashi. Six of the eight kootas in guna milan, including Nadi and Gana, depend on the nakshatra. When you match by name, the first syllable gives both the rashi and the nakshatra. Read how guna milan works for the full scoring.
Rashi by name vs rashi by date of birth
Your birth rashi (Janma rashi) is the sign the Moon was in when you were born. It needs your date, time and place of birth, and it is the one astrologers use for predictions, dasha and sade sati.
Your name rashi (Nama rashi) is only as accurate as the link between your name and your birth star. If your family picked your name from your nakshatra syllable, both will match. If your name was chosen for its meaning, they may not.
| Rashi by name | Rashi by date of birth | |
|---|---|---|
| What you need | Just the name | Date, time and place of birth |
| Accuracy | Good only if the name was chosen by namakshar | Exact Moon sign |
| Good for | Quick checks, Kundli matching when birth time is unknown | Predictions, sade sati, doshas, matching |
| Checks Mangal dosha? | No | Yes |
Our advice: if you know your birth details, make your free Kundli. It shows your Moon sign (rashi), nakshatra and pada at the top. Use the name chart only when birth details are not available.
Rashi by name for marriage matching
Many families compare rashis by name before they have both horoscopes, especially in arranged-marriage introductions. That is a reasonable first filter. Our Kundli matching tool has a “By name only” option that turns each name into a nakshatra and pada, then calculates the 36-guna score.
Keep two limits in mind:
- Name matching can’t check Mangal dosha, because that depends on where Mars sits in the birth chart. Read more in our guide to Manglik dosha.
- Nadi dosha from a name can be wrong if either name does not follow namakshar. Before a final decision, match again with full birth details. See what Nadi dosha means.
Frequently asked questions
How do I find my rashi by name?
Take the first sound of your name, not just the first letter, and find it in the chart. For example, 'Rahul' starts with 'Ra', which belongs to Tula (Libra). 'Priya' starts with 'Pri' which sounds like 'Pi', so it belongs to Kanya (Virgo).
Is rashi by name or by date of birth correct?
The rashi from your date, time and place of birth is your real Moon sign. A name rashi only matches it if your name was chosen from your birth nakshatra, which is the traditional practice. If you know your birth details, use the birth rashi.
What if two rashis share the same letter?
Some sounds such as 'Ta', 'Ti', 'Da' and 'Na' appear under two or more rashis, because they come from different nakshatras. Look at the full syllable (for example 'Ta' as in Tara vs 'Tha' as in Thakur) or use your date of birth to decide.
Can I use rashi by name for Kundli matching?
Yes. Matching by name is common when birth time is not known. It gives a 36-guna score from the name nakshatra, but it cannot check Mangal dosha. Our free Kundli matching tool has a 'By name only' option.
