A Kundli (birth chart, janam kundali) is a map of where the planets were at the moment you were born, seen from your place of birth. Reading one looks hard because it is full of numbers and abbreviations, but the basics come down to six steps.

Have your chart open as you read. If you don’t have one yet, make your free Kundli with your date, time and place of birth.

Step 1: Know your chart style

There are two common layouts. They show the same information in different ways.

Most beginners get stuck on this one point: in a North Indian chart, “7” in a box does not mean the 7th house, it means Libra.

Step 2: Find your Lagna (ascendant)

The Lagna is the sign rising on the eastern horizon when you were born. It becomes your 1st house and sets the starting point for every other house. It describes your body, personality and general direction in life. Read more in Lagna in Kundli.

In a North Indian chart, read the number in the top-centre diamond: that is your Lagna sign. In a South Indian chart, find the “Asc” box.

Step 3: Read the 12 houses

Count anticlockwise (North Indian) or from the Asc box clockwise (South Indian) to find houses 2 to 12. Each house rules an area of life:

House Rules
1st Self, body, personality
2nd Money, family, speech
3rd Courage, siblings, communication
4th Mother, home, property, happiness
5th Children, intelligence, romance
6th Enemies, illness, debt, service
7th Marriage, partners, business deals
8th Longevity, sudden events, secrets
9th Luck, father, dharma, higher learning
10th Career, status, karma
11th Income, gains, friends
12th Expenses, foreign lands, moksha

For a deeper look at each one, read the 12 houses in Kundli.

Step 4: See which sign rules each house

The sign in a house colours that area of life, and the lord of that sign (its ruling planet) carries the house’s results wherever it sits. For example, if Libra is in your 10th house, Venus (Libra’s lord) becomes your career planet.

Sign Lord
Aries, Scorpio Mars
Taurus, Libra Venus
Gemini, Virgo Mercury
Cancer Moon
Leo Sun
Sagittarius, Pisces Jupiter
Capricorn, Aquarius Saturn

Step 5: Place the planets

Now look at which planets sit in which houses. The nine grahas are written as short codes: Su (Sun), Mo (Moon), Ma (Mars), Me (Mercury), Ju (Jupiter), Ve (Venus), Sa (Saturn), Ra (Rahu), Ke (Ketu). An “R” next to a planet means it was retrograde.

A planet brings its nature to the house it occupies. Jupiter in the 5th is classically good for children and learning. Mars in the 7th is one of the placements that makes a chart Manglik.

A useful beginner rule: planets in the 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th houses (kendras) and the 5th and 9th (trikonas) have the strongest, most visible effect on your life.

Step 6: Find your Moon sign, nakshatra and dasha

Our free Kundli shows all three, including the full Mahadasha and Antardasha timeline.

Reading a Kundli for marriage

For marriage questions, look at the 7th house (its sign, its lord and planets in it), Venus, and whether Mars makes the chart Manglik. When you have two charts, use guna milan as a first filter, then look at both 7th houses together.

Putting it together

A first reading of any chart goes like this: Lagna and its lord → strong houses and the planets in them → Moon sign and nakshatra → current dasha. That already tells you a lot. Yogas, divisional charts and transits come later.

Frequently asked questions

How do I read my Kundli by myself?

Start with the Lagna (1st house), then note which sign is in each house, then which planets sit in which house. Next find your Moon sign and nakshatra, and finally your current Vimshottari dasha. That gives you the basic map of your chart.

What do the numbers in a Kundli mean?

In a North Indian chart the numbers are signs, not houses: 1 is Aries, 2 is Taurus and so on up to 12 for Pisces. The houses stay in fixed positions, starting with the top-centre diamond as the 1st house.

Which house is for marriage in Kundli?

The 7th house is the main house of marriage and partnership. Astrologers also look at Venus (and Jupiter for women in traditional texts), the 2nd house for family, and the Navamsa (D9) chart.

Do I need the exact birth time to read a Kundli?

For the Lagna and houses, yes. The Lagna changes about every two hours, so a wrong birth time can shift every house. The Moon sign and nakshatra are much less sensitive to time.
