Sade sati (साढ़े साती, “seven and a half”) is the period of about 7.5 years when Saturn (Shani) passes through three signs around your Moon sign: the sign before it, your Moon sign itself, and the sign after it. Saturn spends about two and a half years in each sign, so three signs add up to roughly seven and a half years.

It is one of the most searched topics in Vedic astrology, and one of the most feared. This guide explains what it actually is, the three phases, who has it in 2026, and how to check yours.

Sade sati is counted from your Moon sign

Sade sati uses your Moon sign (rashi), not your sun sign and not your Lagna. Your Moon sign is the sign the Moon occupied when you were born. If you don’t know it, make your free Kundli: the Moon sign and nakshatra appear at the top of the result.

Using a “rashi by name” is a shortcut, but it may not be your real Moon sign. See rashi by name vs date of birth.

The three phases of sade sati

Phase Where Saturn is Traditional theme
1st phase (rising) 12th sign from your Moon Expenses, travel, sleep, letting go of old things
2nd phase (peak) Your Moon sign Pressure on the mind and health, big responsibilities, maturity
3rd phase (setting) 2nd sign from your Moon Money and family matters, speech, slow recovery

Each phase lasts about 2.5 years, but Saturn’s retrograde motion can stretch a phase by a few months, which is why exact dates matter.

Who is in sade sati in 2026

In the sidereal zodiac used in Vedic astrology (Lahiri ayanamsa), Saturn entered Pisces (Meen) on 29 March 2025. That puts three rashis in sade sati through 2026:

Rashi Phase in 2026 Sade sati ends
Kumbh (Aquarius) 3rd, last phase February 2028
Meen (Pisces) 2nd, peak phase 2030
Mesh (Aries) 1st phase 2032

Kumbh rashi’s sade sati began in January 2020 and ends when Saturn finally leaves Pisces. Saturn enters Aries on 3 June 2027, slips back into Pisces from about 20 October 2027, and enters Aries for good around 23 February 2028.

Meen rashi’s sade sati began when Saturn entered Aquarius (first on 29 April 2022, then for good on 17 January 2023) and continues until Saturn leaves Aries in 2029-30, with retrograde back-and-forth before it settles in Taurus in April 2030.

Mesh rashi entered its first phase on 29 March 2025.

Makar (Capricorn) came out of sade sati on 29 March 2025, when Saturn left Aquarius.

These dates are our own calculation of Saturn’s sidereal position (Lahiri). Calendars that use a different ayanamsa may differ by a day or two.

Shani dhaiya (small panoti)

Alongside sade sati, tradition watches dhaiya or small panoti: the 2.5 years when Saturn is in the 4th or 8th sign from your Moon. With Saturn in Pisces, Dhanu (Sagittarius) has the 4th-house dhaiya and Simha (Leo) has the 8th-house dhaiya until Saturn moves into Aries.

What sade sati is really like

Saturn is the planet of time, discipline, delay and karma. Its transit over the Moon (the mind) can feel heavy: more work, more responsibility, slower results. But the outcome depends on much more than the transit:

Many people marry, buy homes or get promoted during sade sati. It rewards patience and honest effort, and punishes shortcuts.

Common remedies

Traditional, low-cost practices for Saturn include reciting the Hanuman Chalisa or the Shani mantra (“Om Sham Shanicharaya Namah”), lighting a mustard-oil lamp on Saturdays, donating black sesame, oil or blankets, and serving elderly or poor people. Saturn is said to respond to discipline and service more than to expensive rituals.

Be wary of anyone who uses sade sati to sell costly stones or pujas through fear.

How to check sade sati for your own chart

  1. Make your free Kundli and note your Moon sign.
  2. See where Saturn is now (Pisces, until mid-2027).
  3. If Saturn is in the sign before, on, or after your Moon sign, you are in sade sati.

Frequently asked questions

What is sade sati?

Sade sati is the roughly seven-and-a-half-year period when Saturn (Shani) moves through the sign before your Moon sign, your Moon sign itself, and the sign after it. Each sign takes Saturn about two and a half years, so three signs make about seven and a half years.

Which rashis are in sade sati in 2026?

Saturn has been in Pisces (Meen) since 29 March 2025 in the sidereal zodiac. So in 2026 Kumbh (Aquarius) is in the last phase, Meen (Pisces) is in the peak phase, and Mesh (Aries) is in the first phase.

When will Kumbh rashi's sade sati end?

Saturn enters Aries on 3 June 2027, moves back into Pisces from late October 2027, and enters Aries for good around 23 February 2028. Kumbh rashi's sade sati ends with that final exit from Pisces in February 2028.

Which phase of sade sati is the worst?

Tradition usually calls the second phase, when Saturn is on the Moon sign itself, the most intense. In practice it depends on your whole chart, the house Saturn transits from your Lagna, and your current dasha.

Is sade sati always bad?

No. Saturn is the planet of discipline and hard work, and many people get promotions, marriages and property during sade sati. It tends to bring responsibility and slow, earned results rather than only trouble.
